2009

With surf, sand, sunshine and tropical golf courses in abundance, perhaps most folks don’t immediately think of Palm Beach County as "corn country", not to mention the Sweet Corn Capital of the world. But that is precisely the idea when the 9th Annual Sweet Corn Fiesta shucks it’s way to Yesteryear Village on the South Florida Fairgrounds on Sunday, April 26th 2009, between 11:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M.

The event is a celebration of the spring growing season and to those who make it happen. The Sweet Corn Fiesta is sponsored by National City Bank, Ag Enhancement Council, Florida Sweet Corn Exchange and Western Palm Beach County Farm Bureau. Boiled, roasted or raw, corn doesn’t come any sweeter than that grown right here in Palm Beach County. No community grows more. Palm Beach County farmers cultivate more than 27,000 acres yearly. Few counties grow half that acreage. With a shelf life of a week to ten days, the local yield is quickly shipped to supermarkets along the Eastern Seaboard and to destinations as far away as the Midwest, California and Canada.

The Sweet Corn Fiesta features lots of family fun including children rides, games and activities (all free with admission ticket) contests, food, country music and of course the sweetest corn in the world. Come early and enter one of the many contests going on during the day. Feel like you could eat a barrel of sweet corn if given the opportunity? Enter the Adult International Corn Eating Contest and compete against the 2008 Corn King.

Stroll through Yesteryear Village, an historic community of over 20 restored buildings where costumed re-enactors mingle on quaint streets. Early Florida crafters, such as weavers, spinners and candle dippers, demonstrate and put items for sale. Visit the blacksmiths shop and see horse shoes being made. The village is also home to The Bink Glisson Historical Museum and the Big Band Hall of Fame.

Admission is adults $7, children 6-11 $4. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Parking is free. Yesteryear Village is located on the South Florida Fairgrounds in suburban West Palm Beach off Southern Boulevard one mile West of the Florida Turnpike. For additional information, phone (561) 996-0343
